Child Safety Barrier Maintenance Checklists

The presence of a child safety barrier alone will not prevent a child from drowning in a home swimming pool or spa. Drowning prevention is a combination approach.

The Royal Life Saving Society Australia has developed the KEEP WATCH program which details four key drowning prevention strategies:
  • SUPERVISE your child
  • Create a BARRIER between your child and the water
  • FAMILIARISE your child with water; and
  • Learn RESUSCITATION

For a child safety barrier to have any impact on toddler drowning prevention it must be funcitional as an access restirction point and at all times.  Like any other safety device in your home or car YOU must regulary check key aspects of the barrier to ensure they operate effectively and allow the barrier to operate as child safety device.

The Western Australian Government has developed a checklist with the assistance of the Royal Life Saving Society Australia to ensure home owners can regularly undertake maintenace checks.
